India's National Education Policy (NEP) has recently underscored the essential importance of incorporating a child's mother tongue throughout the early years of schooling. There is therefore a great need for planners and practitioners alike to become familiar with the core concepts of Mother-Tongue Based MLE, and approach to foundational literacy and numeracy which has proven successful in many countries across the world.
During this 10-day, face-to-face course, participants will be introduced to foundational concepts in MLE. They will then survey a number of practical techniques for developing language-sensitive learning materials. Finally, there will be a brief exposure to teaching methods which leverage learner’s home language in the classroom.
By the end of this course the participants will be able to:
Explain key principles relating to the aims, goals and implementation of strong MTB-MLE programs.
Explain key theories relating to teaching and learning in MLE programs
Connect theoretical concepts with relevant national/state curriculum competencies
Describe how teaching materials support literacy development in L1 and L2
Understand the process of creating early teaching materials in the L1
Describe effective strategies for acquiring additional languages
Begin advocacy for the implementation of strong MTB-MLE programs in their context
This course will be useful for educators from government or private institutions working in linguistically diverse communities. While there is much to learn about MLE, we believe there is value to building relationships with workers from our LEAD Community of Practice network in India, and these relationships may provide opportunities for coaching and mentorships in the future.
The language of instruction will be English, with translations available Assamese as needed. Should other languages be required, we will try to accommodate.
We expect registration will cost approximately Rs. 8,100 plus food and accommodation (Rs.6-8,000 depending on food preferences). Participants are also welcome to arrange their own food and accommodation off campus if they prefer.
